Context
As the subject matter expert (SME) for HUM1020 Introduction to the Humanities, I found our long-standing textbook no longer met our needs and decided to develop our own OER course content as an alternative to adopting a new textbook. We conducted thorough research, reviewed existing materials, and explored various tool options for content delivery. Ultimately, we decided to use Articulate RISE as the platform for our interactive course text, believing it would best suit our vision for an engaging and comprehensive learning experience.
Design and Development
I collaborated closely with our instructional designer to determine the most effective way to deliver our content. We agreed that RISE was ideal due to its ability to incorporate a mix of text, images, videos, interactive media, and formative assessments. Myselfand the other SME wrote each module chapter in a straightforward, user-friendly format. We worked with the instructional designer who skillfully developed the RISE lessons. I became very interested in the program, so he taught me how to work with RISE throughout the process. I then used Review 360 for a thorough review of the material, making additions and edits to achieve a high-quality final product.
Results
Our collaboration led to the creation of nine comprehensive RISE packages, complete with a course navigation video. This new course material was promptly embraced by both faculty and students, having received excellent feedback since its implementation two years ago. Students particularly highlighted the learning materials as a vital element of the course, appreciating their relevance, practicality, and clarity. My colleagues praised the content for its educational value and ease of understanding. These materials are now a key resource for teaching thousands of students at HCC annually.

Every lesson in this course is organized with the same set of questions, beginning with What is it? This structure allows students to know what to expect.

Writing and developing the content ensured that diversity and currency was achieved in the examples used throughout the course materials.
